Shaking in your thumb is called a tremor or twitch. Essential tremor is an inherited condition that makes the hands shake. If one of your parents has the gene mutation that causes essential tremor, you have a strong chance of developing this condition later in life. The tremor usually appears during movements like writing or eating. Repeating the same motion over and over again — like playing a video game or typing on a keyboard — can damage the muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments in your hands.

Muscle twitching is caused by minor muscle contractions in the area, or uncontrollable twitching of a muscle group that is served by a single motor nerve fiber. Muscle twitches are minor and often go unnoticed. Some are common and normal. Others are signs of a nervous system disorder.
